If you’re making plans to visit Sardinia, the main thing you’re probably concerned about is your itinerary. After all, you want to make the most of your time on the island!
However, another important aspect of your trip you should be thinking about is when you plan to visit. As an Italian island, many people assume that Sardinia has beautiful weather all year round.
While it’s true that Sardinia’s climate is lovely for the most part, there are still certain times of the year that aren’t well-suited to vacations.
Booking a trip to Sardinia at the wrong time of year could actually interfere with your carefully-planned itinerary, so it’s important to consider the timing of your vacation before anything else.
In this guide, we’ll be letting you know which times of the year are ideal for visiting Sardinia – and which are not (see more about visiting Sardinia).
We’ll also be recommending some things to do and see in Sardinia based on when you’ll be vacationing (see more about what Sardinia is famous for here)!
The Best Times To Visit Sardinia
March – April
Between the months of March and April is arguably the best time to go on a trip to Sardinia.
This is because it’s when the climate on the island reaches a good middle ground where it’s sunny and warm but also not so hot and stifling that you can’t do outdoor activities like hiking or cycling.
Things To See And Do
- Hike up any of Sardinia’s mountains
- Take a boat trip to La Maddalena Island
- Visit Perdasdefogu village
- Relax on the beach
- Explore Alghero
- See the historic remains at Costa Smeralda
May – June
The month of May is another great choice for your trip to Sardinia. The weather is a little warmer than in March and April, but it’s still not overwhelmingly hot.
It might be getting a little warm for miles-long hikes, but the weather during this time of year is perfect for relaxing on the beach, taking gentle strolls around Sardinia’s picturesque villages, and going diving.
In June, the weather is warmer than in May, and it may even start to get too hot for comfort depending on your heat tolerance.
However, if you love hot weather, you’ll still be able to enjoy all the activities mentioned above. Just make sure to go in early June to avoid the end of the school year which always means crowded beaches.
Things To See And Do
- Go to La Pelosa beach
- See the Nuraghe Santu Antine
- Visit Quartiere Villanova
- Take a Dolphin watching tour
- Go diving
September – October
If you live somewhere with a damp, Fall climate during the months of September and October, you might have written off these months for your trip to Sardinia, but we suggest reconsidering because this is actually one of the best times of year to visit!
The sea is a warm and comfortable temperature during these months and the climate is perfect for both active vacations involving cycling and hiking, and relaxing beach vacations.
If you want to enjoy the best of both worlds in Sardinia, September or October is the time to go.
Things To See And Do
- Try out some water sports at the beach
- Go horseback riding
- Explore cities such as Cagliari or Olbia
- Attend the Sagra delle Castagne
- Sunbathe at the Costa Rei
The Worst Times To Visit Sardinia

January – February
January and February are the coldest months of the year in Sardinia, and unlike the month of December when there are still Christmas-themed events and markets for tourists to enjoy, you’ll probably find yourself without much to do during this time of year.
The 8 weeks from the beginning of January to the end of February is the time we would least recommend traveling to Sardinia.
Things To See And Do
- Check out some authentic Sardinian restaurants
- Go to the Carnival of Mamoiada
- Try skiing in Gennargentu
July – August
Many people assume that the months of August and July would be the perfect time to travel to Sardinia because the weather is at its warmest.
While it’s true that these are the warmest months of the year in Sardinia, the temperatures really do skyrocket during this time, and if you’re not accustomed to very hot climates, you’ll likely find the heat difficult to deal with rather than relaxing.
July and August are especially unideal months to visit Sardinia if you have a very active vacation planned.
If you’re an outdoor enthusiast and plan to do a lot of hiking, for example, the Sardinian weather between July and August may get in the way.
Even just lounging on the beach during this seemingly perfect time of year can be a challenge, not only because of the risk of sunburn but because schools are closed for the summer holidays and all the locals will want the best spots on the beach, as well.
Things To See And Do
- Find a spot at Spiaggia La Cinta
- Take a sailing trip
- Attend Sagra del Redentore
- Shop at local farmers markets
November – December
We’ve put the months of November and December in the worst months category when it comes to visiting Sardinia because they’re definitely not the best months in terms of doing the usual things people come to Sardinia to do (if you want to know how much you’ll spend in Sardinia, read here).
For example, the gray and damp weather doesn’t really lend itself to relaxing on the beach or going for long hikes.
With that being said, Sardinia in December is an experience many visitors still thoroughly enjoy.
As the island lights up and gets into the spirit of the Christmas season, you might like to take the opportunity to enjoy a more slow-paced, festive-themed vacation.
November, though, is probably a month you want to write off when planning your Sardinian vacation since Christmas festivities won’t be in full swing yet and the weather will be fairly miserable.
Things To See And Do
- Do some shopping at artisan Christmas markets
- Explore castles such as Castello della Fava
- See the sights and dine in Old Cagliari

Final Thoughts
Regardless of when you choose to visit Sardinia, you can still have a great time and make amazing memories.
However, the best time to visit Sardinia is generally considered to be between March and June because this is when you can comfortably take part in the most activities and see Sardinia at its most beautiful without the hustle and bustle of the school holidays.
